Coffee is my jam, through and through. But occasionally I find myself drinking just a bit too much coffee and I have to reign my obsession in juuust a bit. I’m sure many of you can relate! When I cut back on my coffee intake, I sub with some of my other favorite beverages like matcha, herbal tea or hot cacao drinks. The other day I was craving something chocolatey so I concocted an ultra luxurious Honey Rose Cacao Latte with Reishi.

Not only are the ingredients delicious, but they also pack some serious punch!

Cacao is an excellent source of magnesium, potassium, calcium and antioxidants. Consuming cacao prior to menstruation can help cut down on PMS symptoms related to mineral deficiencies. I used cacao powder for this recipe, but you could also use cacao wafers! Try and get organic and/or fair-trade cacao if possible!

Raw honey is my second favorite sweetener, only falling behind maple syrup. Raw honey is full of micronutrients and enzymes that help boost the immune system.

Rose is an herbal wonder, providing a wide variety of health benefits including female health support, mood/stress support and skin health support!

Reishi is a mushroom that is highly regarded in the herbalism world for it’s adaptogenic properties. Adaptogens help the body respond, or adapt, to a variety of stressors. Reishi provides support for stress, sleep and immune function.

To make the cacao latte:

Simply heat 1 cup of milk (dairy or non) plus 1/2 cup filtered water in a small sauce pan with 1 tbsp crushed rose petals, 2 tbsp raw cacao powder, and 1-2 tsp raw honey. Once it begins to simmer, turn off heat and whisk well until chocolate is melted and fully incorporated.

Strain through a fine mesh strainer into a mug and add 1 tsp reishi powder. I simply break open one of my reishi supplements. Adding reishi is optional, and leaving it out will not compromise the flavor!

Next you can use a hand frother or small whisk to froth the latte, then sprinkle with cinnamon, sip + enjoy! If you love coffee and warm drinks as much as I do, check out this other recipe for a maple rose cardamom latte!
