I’ve had a terrible post-wedding habit of creating and photographing a recipe and then never writing the post for it. But as the days since the wedding increase, I realize that it’s time to really get back at it with my blog – as I type this I’m on the third post draft in a row! Isn’t it crazy how waves of inspiration work? Alas, I’ve finally brought you my chai spiced old fashioned recipe!
The old fashioned is definitely an adult beverage staple in the Putney household. Corey and I have been making these together for over two years now! While we adore a classic old fashioned, we find it fun and refreshing to experiment with different variations. Since I’m a glutton for all things spiced during the time period of september to january, I decided to play around with a spice and chai tea infused simple syrup — trust me, you’ll also want to try this.
Corey and I will be enjoying these on Thanksgiving this year, especially since the forecast calls for temperatures in the teens. Between the spices and the bourbon, we’ll feel warm in no time!
Ready to make this hearty and festive beverage? Let’s get shaking!
Chai Spiced Old Fashioned
Between the bourbon and the spices, you'll be feeling toasty in no time!
- Bourbon we love Bulleit!
- 2 chai tea bags loose leaf will also work
- 1/2 cup maple syrup
- 1/2 cup filtered water
- 5 cardamom pods
- 2 cinnamon sticks more for garnishing if desired
- 4 cloves, whole
- 3 star anise
- 2 slices fresh ginger
- 1 navel orange, sliced
- angostura bitters
In a small sauce pan, combine the maple syrup, filtered water and spices. Bring to a boil and let simmer for 10 minutes
Remove from heat and add the tea bags. Let the syrup infuse for 15 minutes.
In a shaker, combine 1.5 ounces bourbon, 1 oz spiced syrup mixture and 2 dashes of bitters. Shake well and pour over ice in a glass lived with a thin orange slice.
Add a fresh cinnamon stick as garnish, if desired. Cheers!
