The temperature is rising and so are my cravings for refreshing home-crafted cocktails. 2 years ago I would’ve cringed at the idea of bourbon, but after being introduced to old fashioned’s by my fiancé when we first started dating, I developed a pallet for a good bourbon, on the rocks even. We often make old fashioned’s at home, but this past weekend we strayed from the standard and experimented with the grapefruit and bourbon combination. I jotted down the measurements and took photos in the event that it was going to be a winner, and I’m so glad I did. Upon first sip, Corey and I knew this was going to be a frequent flyer on our weekend beverage radar.

I lightly sweetened this with pure maple syrup to cut the bitterness of the grapefruit and the strength of the bourbon. You can use more or less depending on your personal taste. I felt like the 1 oz of maple syrup provided the perfect amount of sweetness without completely overpowering the strength and tartness. Shaking it with the ice will slightly dilute the concoction while chilling it. When serving, you can either pour over regular ice cubes, or you can pour over a giant ice cube for less dilution. We have a set of geometric ice mold that we often use when drinking bourbon so as to not make it too watery by the end. Some, however, like the dilution that ice cubes provide. When it comes to drinks, it really is all based on preference.

I used the juice of only half of a grapefruit because it was both large and very juicy. I you have a smaller grapefruit, its on eat drier side, or you’d just like the drink to be juicier, you could certainly juice the whole thing.

Bulleit Bourbon w/ Basil + Grapfruit

Ingredients (Serves 2):

• 3 oz bourbon

• 1 oz maple syrup (more or less as desired)

• juice of 1/2 large grapefruit + some pulp

• Ice cubes (for shaking and for serving

• 2 sprigs of basil

• 2 strands of grapefruit peel


1. Into a shaker, combine the bourbon, maple syrup, grapefruit juice, and 5 ice cubes.

2. Shake well and strain into 2 glasses over fresh ice.

3. Garnish with a twist of grapefruit peel and a sprig of fresh basil
